Why Black Rest Matters

The Racial Rest Gap presents a stark disparity in the realm of rest, particularly pertaining to sleep. Recent studies have shed light on the profound implications that a lack of rest and sleep have on Black community. In examining sleep duration and quality, a comprehensive report by the National Sleep Foundation underscored the significant disparities experienced by different racial and ethnic groups. According to their findings, Black adults consistently report an average sleep duration of approximately 6 hours and 14 minutes on workdays, falling significantly below the recommended 7-9 hours for optimal health. That is a 14% difference between Black adults and the next closest racial or ethnic group. This is the Racial Rest Gap.

Socioeconomic and environmental determinants contribute to the Racial Rest Gap, creating an imbalance that goes far beyond the bedroom and seeps into broader health outcomes.
